Research Paper Idea
I'm stuck between researching the tv series Sex and the City and different types of Wedding magazines. Although I'm leaning towards wedding magazines. I'm interested in finding out what type of sex, love, and romance myths are presented in these magazines and whether they are forwarded or countered. This research paper is geared towards people who are interested in wedding magazines, specifically women who are preparing to get married. I'm hoping to show my audience the falsities presented by these wedding magazines so that they can try to look passed them and view the important material in these magazines. The sources that I will probably need will be a couple different wedding magazines, some books about weddings, and some online sources. i hope to spend time both inside and outside of class researching for myh project. I have a very busy week ahead of me next week and I hope to get as much done on this paper this week as possible!

I think that researching wedding magazines will be interesting. I do not know much about wedding magazines in the US, but I definitely believe that wedding magazines perpetuate some of Dr. Galician’s myths. I see what you want to research on and focus on. However, I wonder specifically what myths you will focus on. As you know, I have done it for my magazine group presentation. At that time, we did Modern Bride. I remember that we were focusing on how Modern Bride perpetuates Dr. Galician’s myth #10 as a part of our discussion. I hope that this will help you. Moreover, I think that it will easier for you to approach your research as we did in the class for the magazine study during the first week.
ReplyDeleteI can see who your target audiences are. I agree that women who are preparing to get married will be interested in your topic. I think that it will be interesting to see if you talk about differences between reality and myths perpetuated in the magazines.
I think that you will need 2 or 3 magazines to analyze for your research. But, not more than 3. In this sense, it will be easier for you to give variety to your research and to focus.
I think that this is definitely doable research.
Good luck~
I ended up deciding on doing a project on "Sex and the City" myself, and it would be interesting if we both approached similar subject material from different avenues, or used the same approach and ended up with different results; it could present a more complex and interesting picture. That being said, I think weddings magazine should provide you with a lot of material dealing fairly obviously with Galician's myths.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't seem like your have your research question developed yet so it's hard for me to comment on that yet, but it might be fun to look at how wedding magazines counter popular romantic myths; it would seem counter-intuitive and that may make it more interesting. Of course, if the evidence supports other conclusions not a lot you can do about that.
It might be easier to just focus on one magazine and then look a perhaps the last 12 episodes, or like at maybe 4-5 magazines from the same season. That way your can find common themes and perhaps find one or two strands to analyze within the framework of Galician's myths.
Your audience is clearly stated and logical. This looks interesting, I look forward to seeing your results.
